What have I learned?
This week we talked about the right to fail and the needs of students including those who think they are terrible at math and those who are great at math however, have an inaccurately low view of their abilities in math. I like what the professor says about the right to fail in terms of inordinately high expectations that some parents can have. Parents don't want their kids to repeat their own mistakes however; kids need to be able to learn their own lessons and experience success and failure. We cannot protect them from every failure nor should we. Parent involvement and attitude has a lot to do with kids’ perception of math and other subjects. There is not a lot a teacher can do about this.
My question is: What can a teacher do to curb parent influence should it have a negative impact on their child’s learning without undermining the parent?
