Math Week #7

What have I learned?

This week I've learned that math clubs are great. This is an after school one hour deal that happens once a week. This gives kids who are struggling a stronger foundation toward concepts being learned at the present time during the regular math period. The group is made up of approximately twelve students and there are 2-3 teachers (including myself) there to help and drive the program. This week, half of the students worked on a fraction game and the other half worked on Math Whiz with fraction concepts 4th grade up to 7th grade. After 1/2 hour the groups changed, those on the games went to the computers and vice versa. The kids loved the computers however, one kid in particular was guessing so it is essential that an adult oversees the computers as not all kids are engaged in the way intended. Teachers need to watch for this and oversee what kids are actually doing on the computers, whether they are at a challenging enough level, vice versa or if they are just pressing buttons.

What do I have questions about?

How do you make kids feel lucky and honored to be attending math club? They don't seem to mind being there but it is hard after a long day at school. If it were viewed as a privilege, perhaps the energy would improve. How do we make math club a privilege if only certain students (struggling students) are invited to attend?
