Emergent Literacy: New Perspectives
This reading highlites the development of literacy in children and the beginning point is from day one. There is no wrong time to introduce literacy with the exception of "too late." The focus should always be on the child's learning and developmentally appropriate for example, don't teach a kindgartener in the same way you might teach a first grader, it will most likely not match up to where they are cognitively however, there are always exceptions.
I like the pen pal idea in this article as it makes literacy relevant to the students' lives meeting several needs at once. At the Social Studies seminar I also attended the session on how to get your students connected worldwide both the old fashioned way as well as with the use of technology through the support of many available resources some of which are free. It is my belief that much of literacy takes place in social interactions both verbal and written in natural environments not always sitting at a desk. There are also neurological developments involved. A child may not be reading and writing one week and the next they are. Is this due to spectacular teaching or a synapse that decided it was time to happen? Does fabulous teaching precipitate those synapses? Yes, I think so, this is why literacy can be introduced by day one as the article states.
